Many of those locally raised battalions suffered heavy casualties through the Somme offensives of 1916. A notable example was the eleventh (Service) Battalion (Accrington), East Lancashire Regiment, better recognized as the Accrington Pals. The Accrington Pals have been ordered to attack Serre, the most northerly part of the main assault, on the opening day of the battle. The Accrington Pals were accompanied by Pals battalions drawn from Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley, and Bradford.[5] Of an estimated seven hundred Accrington Pals who took half in the attack, 235 have been killed and 350 wounded inside the space of twenty minutes.[6] Despite repeated makes an attempt, Serre was not taken until February 1917, at which time the German Military had evacuated to the Hindenburg Line.

Putin justified the invasion with a number of falsehoods: People in Donbas in jap Ukraine had “been going through humiliation and genocide;” Russia sought to “denazify Ukraine” as neo-Nazis had seized power in Kyiv; and Ukraine had gone “as far as to aspire to acquire nuclear weapons.” The lie that Kyiv sought nuclear weapons was particularly pernicious; within the nineties, Ukraine gave up the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal, inherited from the Soviet Union, in giant half as a result of Russia committed to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and to not use pressure in opposition to it.

Putin has been backing the rebels for months and fomenting violence in japanese Ukraine. He’s doing this either because he desires to keep up a perpetual separatist disaster (he did this in Georgia and Moldova as properly) so that he has leverage over the Ukrainian authorities to keep it from crossing him, or as a result of he needed to give himself an excuse to invade on the premise of saving eastern Ukrainians, then annex that territory as he did in Crimea. One other possibility is that he desires to drive some concession from the Ukrainian authorities and/or from the West. In any case, the thinking here is that Putin is after some rapid strategic objective, and can cease once he feels he is achieved it.

The Malmedy MassacreOn Sunday, site – https://hanoiwiki.com – December 17, 1944, shortly after the Germans launched their great offensive in the Ardennes, plenty of American prisoners were shot by troopers of the primary SS-Panzer Regiment at Baugnez crossroads, near the Belgian city of Malmedy. The true scale and circumstances of the Malmedy massacre remain controversial to this day. What is understood is that of the 113 prisoners assembled in the field at Baugnez, 67 died there. Forty-six of them, some of whom had been wounded, managed to flee the scene.
